How to video call on a Samsung TV

To video call on a Samsung TV, clip the Samsung Slim Fit Cam onto the top of the TV, plug it into a USB port, and use a calling app on the TV that your family can call from their phones. Setup takes a few minutes, and after that the TV rings like a phone.

Before you start

Why a Samsung TV makes a great family phone

A phone call shows one face in a small rectangle. A TV call shows a room. When the family sits on the couch, everyone fits in the picture: the toddler climbing over the cushions, the teenager pretending not to be interested, the dog. On the other end, grandma sees all of it at a size where she does not need her glasses.

Samsung TVs do not come with a video calling setup ready to go, and most models do not have a camera built in. So there are two pieces to add: a camera, and an app that can take calls. Here is exactly what you need.

Step by step

Set up video calling on your Samsung TV

  1. 1

Find the right spot for the camera

The top center of the TV is best, so people look at the camera when they look at the screen. Samsung notes the camera can attach magnetically even when the TV is mounted close to a wall, and warns it may fall if the TV is tilted or rotated.

  2. 2

    Plug in the camera

Run the USB cable to a USB port on the back or side of the TV. Tuck the cable behind the TV so it is not pulled loose by a curious toddler or a vacuum.

  3. 3

Open the calling app on the TV

Install the app from the TV's app store, open it, and follow the prompts. Allow it to use the camera and microphone when the TV asks.

  4. 4

Link the TV to your family

Good TV apps show a short pairing code instead of making you type a password with the remote. Enter the code on your phone or on the service's website, and the TV joins your family.

  5. 5

Check the picture from the couch

Sit where people usually sit and look at the camera preview. Everyone on the couch should be in frame, with nobody's head cut off. Nudge the camera if needed.

  6. 6

    Make your first call

Call the TV from your phone. When it rings, press OK on the remote to answer. Talk at normal volume from the couch: the camera has two microphones built in.

A clearer call

How to look and sound great on a TV call

Light in front, not behind

A window behind the couch makes everyone dark. Turn on a lamp near the TV, facing the room, or close the curtains behind you.

Sit back

The camera sees a wide view (Samsung lists an 85 degree diagonal field of view). Sitting back on the couch fits the whole family in. Leaning close makes one big face.

Lower the TV sound

Mute or pause anything else on the TV and turn off music in the room. Background noise competes with voices on both ends.

Help the Wi-Fi

If the picture stutters, try a network cable to the TV, or move the router or an extender closer. Other devices streaming video at the same time can slow things too.

Cover the lens when you like

Samsung lists a privacy cover for the Slim Fit Camera. Some families simply unplug or lift the camera when they want it fully out of the way.

Pick a regular time

A standing time, like Sunday after lunch, means nobody has to coordinate. The call simply happens.

The calling app

FamilyView: made for Samsung TVs and families

FamilyView turns a Samsung smart TV (2022 models and newer) into a family video phone with the Samsung Slim Fit Cam. It is an app, not a box. You buy the camera once, it is yours, and it keeps working with the TV's other apps. There is nothing to rent and nothing to return.

Your family calls the TV from the FamilyView Android app or any web browser at familyviewtv.com. The TV rings and whoever is in the room presses OK on the remote. If grandma has FamilyView on her TV too, your living room can call hers, TV to TV. You pair a TV with a short code, so nobody types a password on a remote.

When nobody is calling, the TV can show a slideshow of family photos shared from everyone's phones, and video messages up to 2 minutes play full screen. Every family member has a tile with a Call button, so calls can go both ways.

Only family can call, one-to-one calls are end-to-end encrypted, there are no ads, and nothing about your family is sold. FamilyView is coming to the Samsung TV app store. Calls to the TV are on the Family plan at $14.99 a month, month to month, cancel anytime. There is also a free plan for the home baby monitor. Read the full Samsung TV page or see pricing.

Samsung TV video calling questions

Does my Samsung TV have a camera?

Most Samsung TVs do not have a camera built in. The Samsung Slim Fit Camera adds one. It sits on top of the TV and connects with a USB cable.

Which Samsung TVs work with the Slim Fit Camera?

Samsung lists the compatible models on the camera's product page for each country. The Australian page names select 2022 to 2023 models, and the Canadian page lists Q60 and up. FamilyView works on Samsung smart TVs from 2022 on with the camera.

Can I call my Samsung TV from my phone?

Yes, with a calling app on the TV and the matching app on your phone. With FamilyView you call from the Android app or any web browser, and the TV rings.

How does the person at home answer?

With FamilyView, the TV rings and shows who is calling, and they press OK on their remote. No phone needed.

Can I video call from my Samsung TV to another Samsung TV?

Yes. With FamilyView on both TVs in the same family, either TV can call the other, so both living rooms are on screen.

Is the camera worth $100?

If it turns weekly phone calls into calls where everyone can see everyone, most families think so. You own it, and it works with your TV's other apps too.
